Headaches? Try these tips.

Headaches may be a nuisance when trying to accomplish your daily goals. Furthermore, they may impede you from enjoying your day pain-free.

At the Practice of Sandra Dinwiddie, NP, pain management for headaches is individualized to each patient, as not all headaches have the same root cause. Headaches have a variety of causes, that can range from stress, diet, musculoskeletal health, and more. Aside from scheduling a consultation to manage your headache and/or migraine pain, here are some tips that may help alleviate the pain felt by headaches:

1. Rest in a quiet, dark room.

Sometimes, you simply need a refresh. Taking a light nap or simply closing your eyes for at least 15 minutes helps your body regulate and relax. Do your best to avoid any distractions during your resting period.

Studies have shown that drinking small amounts of caffeine before a resting period left participants feeling refreshed and more energized. Read more about the science of this here: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/coffee-nap#what-it-is

2. Hydrate.

Up to 60% of your body is water – which you have to drink to get! Take a moment to think back to your last glass and aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day.

3. Consider Botox treatments.

Botox is a common solution for those who suffer with frequent headaches and migraines. Botox is a muscle relaxant that is injected into the upper neck muscles below your head that strain easily, which may be causing frequent headaches/migraines. 4. Stretch.

Feeling tense when you experience headaches? Stretching may help relieve tension in your head, neck, and back muscles – calming your nervous system and soothing your headache pain.

Other remedies to headache pain include receiving massages, medications, and receiving a general health checkup for underlying problems. At the Practice of Sandra Dinwiddie, NP, our nurse practitioners take the time to understand the root causes of your headache and migraine pain to come up with the best pain management solution for your needs and goals.
