First of Many: U.S. Surgeon General: NP Susan Orsega

Did you know that the current U.S. Surgeon General is a Nurse Practitioner? Among the NP community, we are proud to have Rear Admiral (RADM) Susan Orsega, MSN, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN appointed as one of the first Nurse Practitioners to be Acting Surgeon General of the United States.

RADM Orsega has been Director of Commissioned Corps Headquarters at the Office of the Surgeon General since 2019.  Susan Orsega earned her BSN from Towson University in Maryland and an MSN from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences Nurse Practitioner program. Continuing leadership within the nursing community, she has been inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Academy of Nursing. Alongside, she has served as a Senior Program Officer at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health.

Susan has shown brightly in the field of nursing as a leader and liaison for nurses to develop and enhance their careers. In early 2021, nursing practice has broken more barriers in the medical field. A dedicated professional, such as Susan, has stepped into a critical role in the nation’s access to scientific information.

The Surgeon General serves as a direct source of communication to inform citizens of the United States with the most up-to-date and accurate scientific information available on how to improve health and wellness, vitality, and public health safety.
